Later College Deadlines Can Help Procrastinators

(Forbes) By Willard Dix —

If you’ve been procrastinating about applying to college, I have some good news for you. Even though it may seem like December 31 is the last deadline for applying to college, there are plenty of other opportunities to submit applications. In fact, many colleges have application deadlines well into the spring. Of course you want to meet those that are coming up, but don’t despair. Some schools even have “Round II” phases that can accommodate a newfound favorite.

Don’t think of these schools as “consolation prizes” just because their deadlines stretch beyond December. Many good colleges and universities keep their application windows open longer to appeal to students who couldn’t make up their minds earlier or who may have applied elsewhere Early Decision and been deferred or rejected. Sometimes they’re great schools in out of the way locations that take longer to discover. It’s their way of spreading their net a little wider. In many respects they may be more accommodating than those with earlier deadlines.

Be careful, though. Don’t mistake later deadlines for rolling admission options. In rolling admission, you can apply any time and hear back fairly quickly. Your chances depend mostly on whether there’s space in the class at the time you apply, not to mention any financial aid. You might have to wait a semester to enroll. Otherwise, a deadline is still a deadline. Sooner or later, you’ll have to push the “submit” button.

To help you out, here’s a list of some great schools with deadlines in the new year. I’ve listed them alphabetically, and there aremany more. These all happen to be Common Application schools as well.
